After a brief try at architecture, Pierre Castagner decided in favour of plastic arts and registrated at the Collège du Vieux-Montréal in 1974.
He left Saint-Jérôme and moved to Montreal where he has been working and living ever since.
This forts contact with visual arts was most stimulating and his enthusiasm and motivation led him to further his studies at the Université du Québec à Montréal where he studied for a theacher's degree. For the next year and a half, Pierre Castagner was drawn to etching, but he came back to drawing and painting enriched by his experience. In 1980 having obtained his Bachelor of Arts
degree, he accepted a teaching appointment. This experience led him to realize that his career did not meet with his immediate interest and preoccupations.
He decided to concentrate on and continue his personal artistic production while working in cinema, music and theater.

During seven years of practice Pierre castagner has experienced many phases: his approach indicates a well-structured research. His first goal was to master the alphabet of pictorial communication.
Through a steady practice of drawing, his works tended to become faithfull reproductions of his environment, respecting proportions and textures. Feeking wellin control of form, he explored color.
He was then attracted by the freedom of movement; integrated into the works of art it stimulates the viewer's imagination. In a search for intellectual and rational expression, he finally reached the conceptual approach.

These different periods were occasions for Pierre castagner to question the why and the wherefore of the work of art and to reflect on his own concept of art and the artist in his environment.
Pierre Castagner's works deal with different themes which all seem to be linked to the same basic concept, that of duality. Through this concept, the artist expresses his feelings towards actual facts
and realities wich he sets apart as if by instinct. He sees in all things the coexistence of two elements of different nature wich he believes are fundamentally reconcileable. The universe bears witness to this evidence;
on one side the positive, on the other the negative, in the center, balance, the place of meeting of the two poles.
Pierre Castagner uses forms, coors and symbols to make this underlying duality ever more presenta duality which unite into harmony. The artist divides in order to recreate the unity.
Through his paintings he actualizes themes and/or subjects whose universality remains undeniable. His aim is to communicate a positive vision of the world. By intuition he produces figurative images. He uses acrylic on cavas, paper and plywood to create his works.
A level-headed man who enjoys his solitude, Pierre Castagner is an authentic artist, mindful of the interior turmoil felt by his fellowmen and of the quality of life of these times. He has found through visual arts, and especially in painting, a means of expression well suited to his aspirations. Not an end in itself, rather
a starting point.

20 years later, this text is still pertinent. The numeric era brought numerous changes in Castagner's artistic expression. The computer pushes Castagner to a wider diverssification.
